Advanced prostate Cancer

Advanced prostate cancer, also known as metastatic prostate cancer, is a stage of prostate cancer where the cancer has spread beyond the prostate gland to other parts of the body. In its early stages, prostate cancer is often confined to the prostate gland and is considered localized. However, when cancer cells break away from the prostate and travel to other areas of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system, it is referred to as advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer treatment is a very complex and involved process. The expert team at Urology Clinics of North Texas is dedicated to staying up-to-date with the latest emerging treatments and recommendations to ensure patients receive the greatest care available. In addition to treating prostate cancer itself, the Urology Clinics of North Texas team treats each patient on a global level by addressing the physical, nutritional, and emotional side effects that often coincide with strenuous cancer treatment.

Causes

Advanced prostate cancer typically develops when prostate cancer cells grow and spread beyond the prostate gland, a walnut-sized organ in the male reproductive system. This progression is often driven by several factors, including genetic mutations, hormonal changes, and the failure of initial treatments like surgery or radiation therapy. As the cancer becomes more aggressive, it can invade nearby tissues and eventually spread to distant parts of the body, such as bones or lymph nodes, through a process known as metastasis. Advanced prostate cancer is often fueled by the male hormone testosterone, and treatments for this stage of the disease often involve managing hormone levels to slow the cancer’s growth, along with other therapies like chemotherapy or targeted drugs. Early detection and timely intervention are crucial in managing prostate cancer effectively and preventing its advancement to an advanced stage.

Stages of Advanced Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is often grouped into four stages, with stages III and IV being more advanced prostate cancer.

Early Stage | Stages I & II:

The tumor has not spread beyond the prostate.

Locally Advanced | Stage III:

Cancer has spread outside the prostate but only to nearby tissues.

Advanced | Stage IV:

Cancer has spread outside the prostate to other parts such as the lymph nodes, bones, liver, or lungs.

Diagnosis

Advanced prostate cancer is diagnosed through a combination of methods, including digital rectal exams, blood tests to measure prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, and imaging studies such as MRI, CT scans, or bone scans to evaluate the extent of cancer spread. Additionally, a biopsy is often performed to confirm the presence of cancer and determine its aggressiveness. In some cases, advanced prostate cancer may also be diagnosed through the detection of symptoms or complications related to the cancer’s growth, such as urinary issues or bone pain.

Treatment

Once diagnosed, the stage and extent of the cancer are determined to guide treatment decisions, which may include:

  • surgery
  • radiation therapy
  • hormone therapy
  • chemotherapy,
  • immunotherapy

Treatment is tailored to the specific needs of the patient. Regular monitoring and follow-up tests are crucial to track the progression of advanced prostate cancer and adjust treatment strategies as necessary.
